New “Solomon” Update from Joe Carlson

Hey everybody, Joe Carlson here, head of 8-Leafer Studios here in Duluth, MN, and the last you heard from me was an update on my latest project, “Solomon,” featuring my first attempt at creature effects. The film is a story-driven PSA about the mutation epidemic of the 90s and the dangers of wreckless science and pollution, and “Solomon” happens to be one of the first characters I ever invented, back when I was in first grade. Long story short, the film was supposed to be a quick gag project that could’ve been produced in a month, basically with a heavily decorated sock puppet, but the more I worked on the project, the more I cared about it. I spent an unscheduled 6 months on the puppet pieces, and there’s about to be a second reshoot for 3 new shots, but those aren’t the reasons I feel the need to drop this update: Like I said, originally this was supposed to be a goof project, so I didn’t plan on taking every step to make it perfect, I’m just one guy with a really hardcore hobby, so I was going to edit it in different programs that could handle different editing techniques, render my scenes, and load those videos into premiere pro, which would cause an inevitable slight drop in quality. Well, instead, I’ve decided to start the edit over entirely in the newest version of premiere pro, and get it all done in one place.

Although I’ll be starting the edit over from the beginning, I’ll be doing my best to stay on track, as I’m also trying to schedule another shoot with Erika Adams for our next episode featuring “Nixie,” and we’re quickly coming up on that one-year mark in October, from when the cameras first started rolling for “Solomon” on that windy day. I hoped it wouldn’t take this long, and I’m not sure the final product will match my effort, but this is a real passion project that hopefully will keep an important topic alive.

“Solomon” – Coming Soon from 8-Leafer Studios

Hi, Joe Carlson here, and 8-Leafer Studios is my baby. I must “art,” and since film school I’ve been making my own little universe, with the help of my amazing friends, without whom my work would be impossible 🙂 Most recently, Jack Schmidt and I appeared in “Son of a Snow-Man,” and I’ve been too busy to post about that one, maybe we’ll do a deep dive come winter, but for now I want to talk to you about my latest project, “Solomon.”

As part of what Jack Schmidt has unofficially coined “the gummiverse”, “Solomon” will be one of my first videos in years that actually has an on-location setting, yet I can confirm that they belong to the same pantheon of characters, joining “Nixie” the Sprite, “Clover-Man,” “Dane Kirschnott,” “Topper Selfmann” and “Captain Tombstone.” These videos have all had some kind of experimental aspect, “Space Trololol” for example features my first attempt at stop-animation, and took about a month and a half to work on, but “Solomon” has my first attempt at creature creation.

“Solomon” may be the first character I ever really created, as a sketch in one of my 1st-grade school notebooks. Wetlands were a heavily discussed topic, as the midwestern US was experiencing an epidemic of mutations in amphibians, like frogs and salamanders, that apparently has never actually stopped, as the problem only moves these days. As the media was downplaying the issue, we had students bringing in mutated specimens they had found in their yards. Over the years, it inspired many a school report and project showcasing the issue, a couple of them I wrote myself, but what really tipped me over onto this topic recently was when I decided to check old newspaper archives about the issue, and found nothing. It’s like it was erased. You literally couldn’t hold all of the articles that were written about it in both arms, yet there are none to be found at this time, why? Why erase history when the lesson about pollution is so clear? Well, that issue can live on through this character, born in a 30 year-old notebook, in response to the real world.

We filmed the base footage of “Solomon” in October of last year and wrapped in a day. Because of my shoe-string budget, I can’t ask for a lot of takes when my friends are willingly giving up their time for free, under the promise that if I ever make money, they’ll make money, and we have yet to do so, but the trouble we went through to get this done shows how much I care about this specific project. Check out this teaser:

To add some perspective, I started the creature-puppet for “Solomon” immediately after wrapping the shoot, and I have yet to do the final step of air-brushing the sealant, as we have no space to work in for the time being. That’s one of the biggest reasons things are taking so long, no space. I’m in a complicated family situation that basically means I can’t move to a city and be an artistic slave to some company, which I’m actually very thankful for, but it doesn’t come without the problems, like I can’t afford a studio. I did most of the work on the puppet sitting on my bed with parts hanging from the ceiling via ropes tied off to my bedpost, and thereby wrecked my sheets :3 It’s also a headache to find a space to set up a shoot at all, I usually use my living room but it’s often not enough or doesn’t vibe with the schedule.

I will be able to release “Solomon” as soon as I’m able to finish sealing the puppet, get out to the filming sight to get accurate lighting and edit it all together, otherwise the main cut without effects is finished.

While working to finish “Solomon”, pre-production on the continuation of “Space Trololol” has also begun. Erika Adams and Christina Johnson will be reprising their roles as “Nixie” and “Wisp”, and for that one I’m experimenting with another kind of creature creation that should hopefully prove more efficient. If you missed the first one, you can see it here:

That’s our update, and I’d like to give a big “Thanks for watching ^^” from myself and the crew!

Cloverman and the Catalyst Festival

Hi friends, it’s Cloverman Joe Carlson.  This has been an intense week for 8-Leafer Studios, probably its most important week so far since I started it in 2014.  I was recently lucky enough to represent 8-Leafer Studios at the 2019 Catalyst Content Festival.  It was an amazing ride.  I saw tons of pilots and panels, secured a few business relationships, and was able to put the work belonging to my team and I in front of the eyes of several potential new contacts from all over the US, as well as representing some other locals who were unable to attend.  It was a real dream come true for me no matter how you look at it.  There were VIP parties that broke local records, and I met Nancy Cartwright after she gave an amazingly compelling speech, all in my city, at a yearly festival just for creators.  It was awesome to see some new friends win their awards, I saw a lot of dreams come true.  We at 8-Leafer studios will be working towards a submission for next year, so wish us luck!

Here’s an inside look at the festival!

8-Leafer Studios Lands Childrens Book Trailer For Local Talent, Erika Adams *UPDATE BELOW

Good evening, and welcome back to the 8-Leafer Studios Blog!  I’m Cloverman Joe Carlson, and a lot has happened in the past weeks concerning my team and I.  As you may know, our last film project had a digital disaster and we had to cancel it until we all had the time.  One of our new team members, Erika Adams, would have been playing the role of a space-farer named Nixie.  Although she is still scheduled to appear in another project, she’s been so on board I consider her a part of 8-Leafer Studios already.  She is a local radio talent here in Duluth, and recently she had her 50th episode of her show as champion to the art of storytelling, and recently wrote a wonderful children’s book, called “New Moon’s Family.”  She came to me with some wonderful illustrations by Eric Soderstrom, and asked me to animate them into a trailer and whip up a music track to accompany them.  I felt really connected to this project, I have some scheduled to reach the moon next year on the Moon Arts Ark, so you can imagine how I like the recurring theme here.  You will find the final trailer below. It went through a last second re-rendering because I wasn’t available to fix something properly but I don’t think it lost enough resolution to matter. It was a really fun project and I hope she writes many more books!  Find copies on Amazon, barnesandnoble.com, and Itasca, and check out her site at elatales.com!
